Bawi Agua Fresca

Agua frescas are classic Mexican beverages. Traditionally, they’re made with fruit juices like pineapple, lime, and watermelon, but they can also consist of rice water blended with spices such as horchata or even flor de Jamaica (hibiscus). What they all have in common is that, while delicious, they are often packed with sugar. Bawi sought to bring out the nostalgic flavors of Monterrey, Mexico, but through a more health-conscious lens by retaining these flavors, but lowering calories and adding carbonation. We created a brand identity and packaging system that pays homage to Mexican roots and celebrates Austin culture, with a clean and contemporary approach. The Bawi logo incorporates typography with a dimensional vernacular apparent in local food and fruit stands and Mexican street art. The packaging and illustration style was inspired by ‘Lotería’, a traditional Mexican card game similar to bingo that can be traced back to the 1920s, with cards that feature a vintage, watercolor aesthetic.
